BUILDING INSPECTOR I – BUILDING DEPARTMENT

Position Description

(Grade 6)
Beginning to mid-range pay ($23.42-26.02 hourly)

Summary of Position

Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in all phases of residential and commercial building inspections, fire and life safety inspections, and property maintenance inspections to ensure compliance.

Organizational Relationships

1.    Reports to: Chief Building Inspector (City Manager)

2.    Directs:        This is a nonsupervisory position.

3.      Other:          Designated as a full-time classified position with benefits.

Essential Duties

·    Inspects residential and commercial construction and properties to verify compliance with currently adopted codes and ordinances.

·      Assists in reviewing construction documents for compliance with adopted codes and City development requirements.

·     Investigates complaints regarding building, fire, and abatement code violations and determines appropriate action and follow-up.

·      Provides code interpretation and essential information to contractors, architects, engineers, property owners, and the general public. It also provides City Code requirements, building permit requirements, and inspection procedures. 

  • Maintains records (files and database) for all building, development, abatement, and annual fire inspections, documenting all revisions, alterations, inspections, violations, and follow-ups.
  • Completes permitting process by calculating fees and issuing permits.
  • Prepares a schedule and performs annual property maintenance inspections on all residential and commercial properties.
  • Keeps abreast of new codes, building technologies, materials, and methods by attending online and on-location training courses.
  • Performs other duties as required, assigned, or directed and adheres to all safety requirements.

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge gained in three years of experience in the same/similar position or ten years of experience in the construction field. Must have sound knowledge of common and uncommon construction practices, techniques, concepts, methods, and their compliance with current codes.
  • Possesses a high level of communication skills required when in contact with people who are upset, uncooperative, and difficult to communicate and understand how codes and laws apply to them. Speaking with professionals and the public requires poise, tact, diplomacy, and professionalism.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications. Must have a fluent ability with computers, particularly with Excel and Word.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and exhibit manual dexterity, superior balance, and coordination skills to access roofs, attics, crawlspaces, and other locations.
  • Possess or earn an ICC Inspector’s Certification within one year of employment.
