Position Description
(Grade 5) $22.21 hr

Summary of Position
Performs skilled work, conducting and supervising aquatics personnel, activities, and programs at a large municipal swimming pool.  This position is responsible for programming, scheduling, personnel evaluations, and maintenance and improvements to the aquatic center.  Very minimal supervision is received.
Organizational Relationships
  1. Reports to:      Recreation Director
  2. Directs:             Aquatics Center Staff
  3. Other:       Responsible for supervising staff, activities, and the successful and safe operation of the municipal swimming pool, implementing new programming, and providing budgetary input

Essential Duties
  • Manages the operation of the city swimming pool facility and aquatics programs.
  • Conduct swimming lessons and swimming rescues.
  • Supervises and evaluates staff, determines necessary staff, assigns duty stations, and adds or shifts lifeguards to ensure proper coverage based on pool attendance.
  • Directs or conducts in-service training and checks water for proper temperature and purity.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Prepares performance appraisals for all part-time staff members.
  • Implements special events in coordination with Recreation Department staff.
  • Initiates special programming, i.e., junior lifeguard, swim clubs, or swim team.
  • Provides input on changes or modifications in policies, procedures, and solutions to identified problems.
  • Contact and contract professionals for facility maintenance and improvement needs.
  • Participates in hiring and training of part-time personnel.
  • Performs related duties as requested, directed, or assigned and may work varied shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of swimming pools, including all current health and safety standards and practices.
  • Knowledge and skill in lifesaving, first aid techniques, and excellent customer service.
  • Possess good decision-making skills and superior judgment.
  • Knowledge of pool rules and regulations and the ability to enforce them.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.  Provides information to the Recreation Director through meetings and reports.
  • Ability to work independently within established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to withstand physical exertion involved in extremely active positions.
  • Ability to supervise effectively and keep records accurately.
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to attend staff conferences and meetings and cooperate with social and community groups.
  • Ability to maintain aquatic facilities within the budget parameters.  Provides direct input to the Recreation Director for budgetary issues.
  • Must obtain certifications in Lifeguard Training (within 30 days; we provide) and/or Water Safety Instructor Training, Advanced Lifesaving, Water Safety Instruction, CPR (professional), First Aid, and
  • Pool Operator Certification (certification can be done online), as well as a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
